Eugene (Gene) Daugherty Obituary

EUGENE (GENE) DAUGHERTY, age 100, was born on September 4, 1920, in Campbell County, TN, died April 10, 2021 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He grew up and lived in Oneida his entire life except for the time he served in the Army Air Corp in World War II (WWII) and since September 2018 when he lived at the Oakwood Senior Living Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

While serving in WWII, he rose from the rank of Private to Chief Warrant Officer. When he returned home, he married Dereda Acres with whom he had a son, Earl (Carol) Daugherty. Dereda passed away in 1974. In 1976, he married Glenna Lewis who had two children, Jann Lewis and Jerry (Johnnie) Lewis. Glenna passed away in 2017.  He is survived by a large number of special Grand Children and Great Grand Children.

Following his time in the Service, Gene worked for Jellico Grocery Co. in Oneida. He then worked for Stearns Coal and Lumber Co. in Stearns, Kentucky. In 1973, he purchased the Lazy Suzan Restaurant in Gatlinburg, Tennessee which he ran for 10 years before retiring to Oneida.

His family is very thankful that he received Jesus as his Savior and Lord (Romans 10:9 & 10) and that he will spend eternity with Him in Heaven. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Oneida, Tennessee.

A special thanks goes to the personnel at the Oakwood Senior Living Center, Knoxville who lovingly took such good care of him while he was a resident. Another special thanks goes to the Doctors and Nurses of the VA  Home Based Primary Care unit and to the personnel of UT Medical Center Hospice Services both of whom took very good care of him.
