James Michael (Mike) Slaven Obituary

James Michael (Mike) Slaven, age 62, departed this life to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, at Turkey Creek Medical Center, Knoxville, TN.  Born May 23, 1958, in Warsaw, IN and he grew up in Goshen, IN.   He moved to Oneida, TN, in 1980.  Mike was of the Baptist faith and attended Bethlehem Baptist Church.  For many years he worked at Harvey’s Neighborhood Rentals, among other places, but he is best known for Mike’s Station, where he served everyone like friends and family. Since 2004 Mike was a member of the Scott County Rescue Squad and was currently the Unit Director for the local squad.

Mike was the son of the late James and Sandra “Joyce” (Jones) Slaven.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law:  Bessie Slaven; sister-in-law:  Christine “Slaven” Boyatt and husband Caney; and his infant brother Kenny Slaven.

He is survived by his wife:  Dorothy Slaven; son:  Gregory Michael Slaven and wife Angelina; grandson:  Jayden; brother:  Jerry Slaven and wife Diane all of Oneida; sister:  Candi Slaven of Lebanon, TN; brother-in-law:  Freeman Slaven and wife Betty; sister-in-law:  Faye Slaven of Oneida; nieces and nephews:  Shane Slaven, Mark Slaven, Curtis Boyatt, Mary Boyatt, Michael Boyatt, Darral VanGoethem, Amanda Cross, Michelle White, and Adam Eckstein; seventeen great-nieces and nephews; and many other special relatives and friends all of whom he loved dearly.  

Friends may visit with the Slaven family on Sunday, February 7, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Oneida.

Funeral Service will be on Monday, February 8, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church with Bro. Steve Hodges officiating.  Rescue Squad honors presented by Paul Trumpore, Director – TN Federation of Fire Chaplains.

Burial will follow in the Katie Blevins Cemetery in the Big South Fork National Park.  Pallbearers will be Shane Slaven, Ernest Slaven, Gene Hatfield, Jerry Watts, Bill Duncan, Tim West, Monty Burke and Waylon Jeffers. 

With the Health Guidelines in place at this time, we ask that you be mindful of the social distancing measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.  Masks are required.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Byrdi’s Playground Project.
