Edith Payne Foster of Oneida, TN, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the age of 92. Born June 15, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Miller Payne and Daisy Nona Anderson Payne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Arthur Foster; son Gary Foster; sisters Opal Acres and Geneva Strunk; brothers Estel, Kenneth, John, Ralpherd and Lewis Payne.
Survivors include children Larry and wife Nancy Foster, John and wife Deidre Foster, Nona Baird, Shawna and husband Jack Bertram, and Glenna Shelton; daughter-in-law: Tammy Cross; grandchildren Laura and husband Josh Webber; Matthew and wife Jessica Foster; Michael and wife Katie Foster; Jonathan and wife McKelia Cotton; Christopher Cotton; Matthew and Kati Baird; Jacqueline and husband Cody Posey; Emily Bertram; Evangeline and Jack Foster; Michael and wife Lori Shelton; Jason and wife Katie Shelton; Marc Shelton; great granddaughters Kathryn Webber, Jean Louise Foster, Denton and Graylin Foster; great grandson Tate Foster; a special niece Arnie Foster Tubbs and husband Charlie; other family members and a host of friends.
Edith was a strong Christian woman and Mother. She graduated from Oneida High School where she played women’s basketball for the team. She taught school, worked at Boss Glove Factory and later at First Trust & Savings Bank. She babysat for years and likely when she was first called Ms. Edith, which was what everyone called her. She loved sewing, quilting, gardening, canning and cooking. If you never had some of Ms. Edith’s fried apple pies or chicken & dumplings, you either didn’t grow up in Oneida or you're too young to have experienced her cooking. She was also active in the community with her Women on Missions group as well as church activities including teaching Sunday school for years and managing the community room kitchen.
Friends may visit with the Foster family Thursday evening January 25th from 5:00 PM until time of funeral service at 7 p.m. at the New Haven Baptist Church with Patrick Sexton and James Roberts officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir.
Graveside service will be conducted Friday January 26th at 10:30 a.m. at Cooper Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers are grandsons Matthew and Michael Foster, sons-in-law Josh Webber and Cody Posey, great nephew Mike Slaven, and great great nephew Kenny Poore.
